According to the latest National Health Interview Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women are more likely to report having some form of arthritis or related condition than men. There are more than 200 types of these diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, back pain, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia and tendinitis. Some of these are very serious diseases that can be difficult to diagnose and treat, but patients often fare better when these problems are diagnosed early. Patient education programs and occupational therapy are often recommended as part of treatment plans.
